Indigenous Relations & Awareness

INTRODUCTION

Over the last several years the Thornbury-Clarksburg Rotary Club has supported the National Rotary movement establishing “Honoring Indigenous Peoples” as a national charity. The board now feels it is time to establish a new Indigenous Director’s position to provide the necessary leadership. Clay Melnike, who recently joined our club, is our new Indigenous Director and has significant experience working in sport development and the leadership field, and particularly with the Indigenous Peoples over the past seven years. Clay is in the process of soliciting input and setting up the new committee to assist him in determining how we can have a positive impact on this important topic for our community and for Canada.

SCOPE OF THE NEW INDIGENOUS PORTFOLIO  

The portfolio has 4 pillars:

  • Research and Data Collection
  • Awareness
  • Education
  • Relationship Building

Path to Understanding
Awareness Sharing #2 - Jan 29, 2022
 
Our club would like to share another small step forward on our journey for a fuller understanding of our country's history, and towards reconciliation... last May, CBCListen launched an 11 episode podcast series: Telling Our Twisted Histories. Each 15 to 25 minute episode consists of conversations with people from some 15 Indigenous communities explaining what impact a word steeped in colonial history (such as discovery, reserve, family names, savage, obey) has on their lives even today. These fresh and real conversations are eye-opening and thought-provoking...if you haven't already listened to them, we encourage you to open the link and take in these interesting conversations.

This week's #tcrcommunitykindness contemplation is a very special 15 minute video rather than a word message. It is also our invitation to you to join our club as we proceed on our journey of gaining a fuller understanding about our country's history and of the cultures of the First Nations, Inuit and Metis who were here long before the settlers arrived. Without this understanding we cannot move towards true reconciliation. We hope you enjoy this video and watch for more of our Indigenous Awareness posts coming over the next few weeks and months.
