Thornbury-Clarksburg Rotary Projects
Literacy Project at Beaver Valley Preschool
Beaver Valley Preschool has served the needs of families in the area for 25 years. Having outgrown their long-time home in Clarksburg, the Preschool "bounced around" for several years, always dreaming for a permanent home.
In 2006, that dream came true with the agreement that saw a Preschool building constructed on the Bluewater School Board property at Beaver Valley Community School in Thornbury. Once that process was underway, the not-for-profit Preschool launched a fundraising campaign to help them furnish and equip the new building.
At this point, Thornbury-Clarksburg Rotary saw an opportunity to support this important institution in our community and to further the LITERACY needs of the children attending the Preschool. A total of $11,300 was donated to Beaver Valley Preschool for these purposes. Once again, through the energy and generosity of Jeremy Wentworth-Stanley, $10,000 was contributed through CIBC Wood Gundy's Christmas Miracle Fund. The remainder came from the proceeds of the November 2006 Trivia Night, jointly sponsored by T-C Rotary.
Beaver Valley Preschool continues to be a going concern and continues to serve the younger families of our Beaver Valley Community. Thanks to some imagination and generosity, the literacy needs of the Preschool children at the facility have been greatly enhanced.
No TRIVIAL contribution, this...!
T-C Rotary Treasurer is pictured here, presenting the first of our contributions -- the $1300 proceeds of the Fall 2007 Trivia Night!
That BIG cheque again...
When the CIBC Wood Gundy Christmas Miracle funds were finalized, Jeremy Wentworth-Stanley (4th from the right) was on hand to help present the cheque to Preschool's board and staff. That made the total contribution $11,300.
The OFFICIAL Ribbon Cutting!
When the Preschool was ready for their Official Opening, 3 people were on hand to cut the ribbon (l to r) -- Sherry Kadwell, who started the Preschool 25 years earlier; Gail Ardiel; and Jeremy Wentworth-Stanley, of CIBC Wood Gundy. Assisting in the process were: on the left, Julie Brady, 2007 President of the Beaver Valley Preschool Board and, on the right, Rotarian Ed Rogers, immediate Past President of Thornbury-Clarksburg Rotary Club.
Some of the many books purchased with the Literacy funds.
...and LOTS of other learning materials
Many other reading/literacy games and materials were obtained as part of this project.
The computer centre has become a popular spot -- all part of the Literacy project. Many software titles were also purchased.
This well-equipped listening centre is another valuable addition to the program.
The new flat-screen TV has already proven to be a useful and effective part of the Preschool program.
During the Official Opening, Preschool Board President, Julie Brady, took time to share some of the wonderful new materials with Rotarian Terri Robbins, Community Service Director of the Rotary Club and with Jeremy Wentworth-Stanley of CIBC Wood Gundy.
Already in use...
Also during the opening, this mom and her child enjoyed one of the two fully-equipped reading areas at the Preschool. Seating, mats, book racks and books were all obtained with the funds provided by Rotary and the Christmas Miracle Fund.
Each reading area bears a sign acknowleding the support of T-C Rotary and CIBC Wood Gundy...a nice touch.
