Thornbury-Clarksburg Rotary Projects
New Cabin at Presquille Rotary Camp
The Rotary Camp at Presquille has a long and successful history of serving the children and youth of Grey and Bruce counties. Owned by the Rotary Club of Owen Sound and operated by the Family "Y" of Owen Sound, the camp serves more than 600 kids each summer.
In the spring of 2006, as part of the restoration and expansion program at the camp, Thornbury-Clarksburg Rotary undertook to build a new cabin. In the space of 3 weeks, a large group of eager T-C Rotarians built a beautiful new cabin, big enough to house 10 campers! Although lots of hard work, it was a wonderful project, involving plenty of hands-on time for the group. Our Rotary Club is always quite happy when we have a chance to "roll up our sleeves" and get to work.
In order to fund this project, once again Jeremy Wentworth-Stanley of CIBC Wood Gundy in Owen Sound came to our aid with a generous donation of funds from their Christmas Miracle Fund -- intended to serve the needs of children and youth.
The new cabin (rumoured to soon be named "The Apple Bin") was completed in lots of time to welcome a full summer's worth of campers and made an outstanding addition to the camp!
The floor slab is ready
Once the floor slab was in place, the "worker bees" were good to go!
Wall #1 is underway
The team eagerly got that first wall together and ready to install.
Starting to take shape
With "all hands on deck", the walls went up fairly quickly.
Time for gable ends
With the walls nearing completion, it was time to get the gable ends contructed.
A busy work site
The crew worked well throughout the build -- everybody "gainfully employed"!
A meeting of the minds...
Rotarian Danny Irvine (on the left), co-chair and foreman of the cabin project, confers with Rotarians Ed Rogers and Adam Meesters.
Trusses in place
With the trusses in place, it was time to get the roof sheeting installed.
Pay attention, Peter!!
Rotarian Peter Powell poses with the saw...it's o.k....it wasn't running!
Coffee Break!
Here's some of the crew, T-C Rotarians all, during one of the morning coffee breaks. A happy looking bunch, no?
A window onto the world...
The windows are installed, giving future campers a GREAT view of their beautiful setting....a few metres from the shores of Georgian Bay.
Roofing in progress
Just a bit more roofing to finish, and the cabin will be ready to go!
"Welcome to your home away from home..."
Rotarian Gerry Abercrombie, co-chair of the cabin project, welcomes us at the door of the newly-finished cabin.
Finished!
Isn't that a handsome looking cabin? We can just imagine the fun that the campers will enjoy for years and years to come! Congratulations to Presquille Camp and to the construction crew from T-C Rotary! And thanks, once again, to the Christmas Miracle Fund of CIBC Wood Gundy, whose generosity made this project happen!
