Thornbury-Clarksburg Rotary Club - Community

Our Community

Thornbury and Clarksburg are situated at the mouth of the beautiful Beaver River, on the southern shore of Georgian Bay. The 2 adjacent communities have a combined population of about 2500 and lie at the center of the larger municipality known as The Town of the Blue Mountains -- home to 5500 people.

In addition to being one of the fastest-growing 4-season tourist destinations in Ontario, the area is also the most important apple growing region in the province, with over 1600 hectares (4000 acres) of orchards supplying the half dozen local apple processing plants.

Thornbury and Clarksburg are ideally situated - on the shores of Georgian Bay, in the northeast corner of Grey County. Just 22 kilometers to the east lies Collingwood and the rest of the Georgian Triangle tourist area. Meaford is a 13 km drive to the west, and another 28 km beyond that, is Owen Sound, the centre of the Grey Bruce tourist area.

The Georgian Trail runs right through Thornbury, connecting Collingwood and Meaford. Blue Mountain Resort, the largest ski facility in Ontario, is situated between Thornbury and Collingwood, just inside the eastern boundary of the Town of the Blue Mountains. Also located on the Niagara Escarpment in the area are several private ski clubs: Georgian Peaks, Alpine Ski Club, Craigleith Ski Club, and Osler Bluff Ski Club.

Up the Beaver Valley, 24 km south, lies the village of Kimberley where Talisman Mountain Resort and the private Beaver Valley Ski Club can be found. Flesherton and Hwy. 10 are reached a further 16km south, at the top of this scenic valley.

Ours is a vibrant, dynamic community, with a constant array of interesting and varied activities that involve the local, full-time residents and weekend residents alike. Thornbury-Clarksburg Rotary Club plays an important role in many of these events. Visit the local community events calendar for more information.

There is something here for everyone - skiing and snowboarding, wind surfing, hiking, biking, birding, fishing, sailing, swimming, canoeing and so much more. With so many wonderful recreational and cultural opportunities, there is little wonder that the area has become a destination of choice both for young families and for the newly-retired.
